Learning More About Tazicef's Indications

How Does Tazicef Work?

Tazicef is a cephalosporin antibiotic. Cephalosporins are part of a larger group of medications known as beta-lactam antibiotics (named after the ring-like "lactam" structure of these drugs). Tazicef works by stopping bacteria from making cell walls, which eventually causes the bacteria to die. Cephalosporins are related to penicillins.

Can Children Use It?

Tazicef is approved for use in children, even in newborns. Because the Tazicef dosage used in children is based on weight, it is important that your healthcare provider has an accurate weight for your child. It may be best to actually weigh the child, since a child's weight frequently changes.

Off-Label Uses for Tazicef

On occasion, your healthcare provider may recommend this product for something other than treating the infections discussed in this article (this would be known as an "off-label" use). Using Tazicef to treat other types of infections or to prevent any type of infection would be off-label uses. For instance, this medication is sometimes used off-label to prevent surgical infections.
