Caffeine, corticosteroids, NSAIDs, and methotrexate are among the drugs that can interact with Cipro XR. As a result, the effectiveness of the medications may be reduced or you may be at an increased risk of side effects. If interactions are a concern, your healthcare provider may adjust your dosages and/or monitor you more carefully during treatment.

An Overview of Interactions With Cipro XR

Cipro® XR (ciprofloxacin extended release) is a prescription medication used to treat urinary tract infections (UTIs). This medication can potentially react with several other medications. Some of the drugs that may lead to Cipro XR drug interactions include but are not limited to:
  • Aluminum, calcium, or magnesium antacids (Alternagel®, Gaviscon®, Maalox®, Mylanta®, Tums®, and many others)
  • Caffeine
  • Corticosteroids, such as:
    • Betamethasone (Celestone®)
    • Cortisone
    • Dexamethasone (Decadron®)
    • Fludrocortisone (Florinef®)
    • Hydrocortisone (Cortef®)
    • Methylprednisolone (Depo-Medrol®, Medrol®)
    • Prednisolone (Orapred®, Pediapred®)
    • Prednisone
    • Triamcinolone (Kenalog®, Aristospan®)
