Some Elmiron Precautions and Warnings

Some precautions and warnings to be aware of with Elmiron include:
 
  • If you have liver disease or liver failure, your body may not metabolize the Elmiron as intended. Therefore, you may start at a lower dose of Elmiron and require extra monitoring by your physician.
     
  • If you have a history of heparin-induced thrombocytopenia, caution should be used when taking Elmiron 100 mg.
     
  • Elmiron is a pregnancy category B medicine, meaning that Elmiron doesn't appear to cause any major birth defects. However, if you are pregnant, you should only take Elmiron if the benefit outweighs the possible risk to your unborn child. If you become pregnant while taking Elmiron, contact your healthcare provider immediately.
     
  • It is not known whether Elmiron passes through breast milk. Therefore, if you are taking Elmiron, it is recommended that you exercise caution while nursing.
     
  • Because Elmiron has a weak anti-clotting effect, it may affect bleeding times.

You should not take Elmiron if:
 
  • You are allergic to Elmiron or any component of pentosan polysulfate sodium.
  • You will be undergoing surgery or a medical procedure.
