Cipro XR for Gonorrhea

Cipro® XR (ciprofloxacin extended release) is approved to treat both uncomplicated and complicated urinary tract infections, as well as kidney infections. Gonorrhea is not treated with Cipro XR because the medication is not approved for that use. Your healthcare provider will recommend a different antibiotic instead.

Cipro XR is only effective against certain types of bacteria, such as:

  • Escherichia coli (E. coli)
  • Proteus mirabilis
  • Enterococcus faecalis
  • Staphylococcus saprophyticus.

Gonorrhea is caused by a different kind of bacteria, and it is possible that Cipro XR would not be effective against it.
