More Info on Cipro XR Interactions

Sulfonylureas
There have been reports of changes in blood sugar (both low and high) in people taking sulfonylureas with Cipro XR. Low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) may be more likely within the first couple of days of beginning treatment with Cipro XR, while high blood sugar (hyperglycemia) may be more likely after several days.

If you take a sulfonylurea, your healthcare provider may recommend that you check your blood sugar more often while taking Cipro XR.

Theophylline
Cipro XR may increase the level of theophylline in your blood, potentially increasing your risk for serious side effects, such as seizures. If you take these medications together, your healthcare provider will likely monitor the level of theophylline in your blood, and you may need a lower dose.

Tizanidine
Cipro XR may increase the amount of tizanidine in your blood, increasing your risk for side effects, such as sedation or low blood pressure (hypotension). The manufacturer of Cipro XR recommends that these medications not be taken together. However, if your healthcare provider recommends that you take tizanidine with Cipro XR, you may need to be watchful for side effects of tizanidine.

Typhoid Vaccine
Antibiotics, including Cipro XR, may decrease the effectiveness of the typhoid vaccine. This drug interaction only occurs with the oral typhoid vaccine. It is generally recommended that the oral typhoid vaccine be postponed for at least a day after finishing Cipro XR.

Vitamins or Supplements With Aluminum, Magnesium, Calcium, Zinc, or Iron
Aluminum, magnesium, zinc, calcium, and iron can bind to Cipro XR in the digestive tract, reducing the amount of the medication that is absorbed into the bloodstream. You should take Cipro XR at least two hours before or six hours after any vitamins or supplements containing aluminum, magnesium, calcium, zinc, or iron.
