Drug Interactions With Cipro XR ExplainedThe following sections explain in detail the potentially negative interactions that can occur when Cipro XR is combined with any of the drugs listed above.
Aluminum, Calcium, or Magnesium Antacids
Aluminum, calcium, and magnesium can bind to Cipro XR in the digestive tract, preventing it from being fully absorbed into the bloodstream. You should take your Cipro XR dosage at least two hours before or six hours after any products containing aluminum, calcium, or magnesium.
Cipro XR may reduce the body's ability to clear caffeine, potentially increasing its effects. Therefore, it may be a good idea to limit your caffeine intake while taking this medication. Keep in mind that many food and beverages, such as coffee, tea, and chocolate, contain caffeine.
Taking Cipro XR with corticosteroids may increase your risk for tendon problems, such as tendonitis or tendon rupture. Older adults who take corticosteroids appear to be at an even higher risk for this drug interaction. If you take Cipro XR with a corticosteroid, be sure to watch for any signs of tendon problems, such as tendon or joint pain or tenderness (see Cipro XR and Tendon Rupture for more information).
Some forms of didanosine can bind to Cipro XR in the digestive tract, preventing it from being completely absorbed into the bloodstream. You should take Cipro XR at least two hours before or six hours after didanosine. Not all forms of didanosine react with Cipro XR, however, so be sure to ask your pharmacist about this possible interaction with your particular didanosine product.
Cipro XR may increase the levels of erlotinib in your body, increasing your risk for side effects. If you take these medications together, watch for signs of severe erlotinib side effects, including severe diarrhea and skin reactions. Your healthcare provider may need to decrease your erlotinib dosage.
