Cipro XR and Breastfeeding

Although no studies have been conducted so far on Cipro XR and breastfeeding, theoretically, the medication could pass to a nursing infant, so its use is discouraged in women who are breastfeeding. However, because the benefits of the drug could outweigh the potential risks, it is best to discuss the matter with your healthcare provider.

Can I Use Cipro XR While Breastfeeding?

Cipro® XR (ciprofloxacin extended release) is a prescription medication used to treat urinary tract infections, including bladder infections (cystitis) and kidney infections (pyelonephritis). This medication passes through breast milk. Therefore, if you are breastfeeding or plan to start, talk with your healthcare provider about using Cipro XR.

More Information on Breastfeeding and Cipro XR

Cipro XR is known to pass through breast milk in small amounts. However, no studies have been done to determine how much, if any, of the medication is absorbed by the nursing child.
Theoretically, the calcium in breast milk could bind to Cipro XR in the infant's digestive tract, preventing or reducing the amount of medication that would normally be absorbed into the bloodstream (this is why Cipro XR should not be taken with calcium). However, it is not known if this is really the case.
Because Cipro XR can cause serious joint and muscle problems in infants and children, concerns exist about possible exposure to the drug through breast milk. Therefore, Cipro XR should probably be avoided in breastfeeding women if possible. In some situations, however, the benefits of using the medication may outweigh the possible risks.

Talking With Your Healthcare Provider

You should discuss breastfeeding and Cipro XR with your healthcare provider. Each woman's situation is different, and you and your healthcare provider understand your situation best. After considering what you want and expect, as well as your current health situation, the two of you can make a shared decision that is right for you.
