The antibiotic Cipro® XR (ciprofloxacin extended release) is approved for the treatment of kidney infections as well as both complicated and uncomplicated urinary tract infections (UTIs). It works by interfering with two specific enzymes bacteria need to multiply and reproduce. However, Cipro XR is only effective against certain types of bacteria.
This medication comes in tablet form and is generally taken once a day. Most people tolerate it well; however, side effects are possible. Common ones include nausea, diarrhea, and headache.
