Nitrofurantoin Antibiotic Information

Nitrofurantoin (Furadantin®, Macrobid®, Macrodantin®) is an antibiotic used for the treatment and prevention of urinary tract infections (UTIs). It comes in the form of a liquid, capsule, or slow-release capsule. The medication is usually taken two to four times a day, depending on which product you are using. Most people tolerate it well, but possible side effects can include vomiting, loss of appetite, and nausea.
 
This antibiotic may not be the best choice for everyone, so it's important to discuss nitrofurantoin's safety information with your healthcare provider before starting treatment. For example, let your healthcare provider know if you have kidney disease, diabetes, or any other medical conditions before taking this product. Also, tell your healthcare provider if you are pregnant or are taking any other medications (including prescription and nonprescription drugs, vitamins, and herbal supplements).
